Elevations of the new silage clamp and feed area.

AssetSphere secured Prior Approval for a new silage clamp and feed area as part of our client’s project to modernise the dairy unit on their farm in Dorset.

Navigating environmental-impact challenges

The project faced several notable challenges that required specialist attention and expertise. The farm’s proximity to an airfield meant there were height restrictions to be considered. And the presence of a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) nearby necessitated comprehensive air quality impact assessments.

Due to the need for additional information, Prior Approval was required. AssetSphere took the lead in coordinating all aspects of the project documentation and consultant input. This included commissioning detailed air quality assessments from AS Modelling and Data, alongside technical drawings developed by P&L AgriConsulting.

Planning application submission and success

We then submitted of a carefully prepared application under Part 6, Class A(b) of the General Permitted Development Order, which specifically addresses agricultural excavations and earthworks.

A tandem application (under Permitted Development) for a slurry lagoon meant cumulative effects had to be considered. Natural England raised several points that AssetSphere successfully addressed by proposing a fixed cover for the slurry lagoon, with AS Modelling and Data revising the air quality calculations accordingly.

These measures proved successful, and Prior Approval was secured for the development. The silage clamp and feed area will now allow the dairy farm to benefit from improved facilities whilst respecting the sensitive local environment.

The project exemplifies AssetSphere’s commitment to helping clients deliver agricultural improvements while balancing operational needs with environmental responsibilities and regulatory compliance.
